Core Materials in The Lightweight Era
Nov 10, 2025
In the industrial trend of pursuing lightweight and high-performance, aluminum silicon alloy has become an indispensable key material in high-end fields such as aerospace and automotive manufacturing due to its excellent comprehensive performance. Among them, AlSi12, as a widely used hypoeutectic aluminum silicon alloy, is playing a crucial role.
Material Introduction
AlSi12, Its name directly reveals the core components: an alloy composed of aluminum (Al) and approximately 12% (weight percentage) silicon (Si). This composition design belongs to the category of hypoeutectic alloys, and the as cast structure is usually composed of soft α - Al solid solution dendrites and aluminum silicon eutectic crystals. By adding trace amounts of magnesium (Mg), manganese (Mn) and other elements and conducting appropriate heat treatment, its mechanical properties, especially strength, can be significantly improved. AlSi12 is known for its excellent casting flowability, low thermal cracking tendency, moderate strength, and good corrosion resistance.
Production process
The production of AlSi12 mainly adopts the smelting casting process. Firstly, high-purity aluminum ingots and intermediate alloys (such as aluminum silicon alloy ingots) are heated to a molten state in a melting furnace according to the ratio, and refined to remove hydrogen gas and impurities. Subsequently, the molten alloy liquid is poured into the mold to form ingots or directly cast into near final shape parts (such as die-casting, metal mold gravity casting). For components that require high mechanical properties, castings also need to undergo T6 heat treatment: first, a solid solution treatment (quenching) is carried out to fully dissolve the alloy elements into the aluminum matrix, then rapidly cooled, and then artificially aged to uniformly disperse and precipitate the strengthening phase, thereby achieving the purpose of strengthening.
Material Features and Applications
AlSi12 aluminum silicon alloy has excellent casting performance, good mechanical properties, lightweight, strong corrosion resistance, and good thermal conductivity, making it particularly suitable for complex shaped and thin-walled castings. After T6 heat treatment, it has high strength and hardness, meeting the load-bearing requirements of structural components. Its density is only 2.66 g/cm ³, suitable for lightweight applications. The surface of AlSi12 is easy to undergo anodizing and spraying treatment.
Widely used in the automotive industry (such as engine cylinder heads and wheels), aerospace (such as brackets and shells), mechanical manufacturing (such as pump casings and compressor components), electronic appliances (such as radiators and motor casings), and daily consumer goods (such as cookware and hardware tools).
