health hazard
Acute manganese poisoning is common in oral administration of potassium permanganate solution with a concentration of more than 1%, which causes oral mucosal erosion, nausea, vomiting, and stomach pain; 3% to 5% solution causes gastrointestinal mucosal necrosis, causing abdominal pain, blood in the stool, and even shock; 5 to 19 grams of manganese can be fatal. Welding under poor ventilation conditions, inhalation of a large amount of new manganese oxide fumes, can cause sore throat, cough, shortness of breath, and sudden chills and high fever (metal fume fever).
Chronic manganese poisoning usually occurs after exposure to manganese smoke and dust for 3 to 5 years or more. Early symptoms include dizziness, headache, aching limbs, weakness and heaviness in the lower extremities, sweating, palpitations, and mood changes. As the disease progresses, muscle tone increases, finger tremors, tendon hyperreflexia, lack of interest in surrounding things and emotional instability occur. In the later stage, typical tremor paralysis syndrome appeared, including increased limb muscle tone and resting tremor, speech disturbance, gait difficulty, etc., as well as mental symptoms such as involuntary crying and laughing, obsessions, and impulsive behavior.
Manganese fume can cause pneumonia, pneumoconiosis, conjunctivitis, rhinitis and dermatitis.
